How to find your perfect foundation shade

Like looking for the right pair of jeans, finding your perfect foundation could take some time. With endless coverages, finishes, and shades to choose from, your search for The One could leave you with a shelf of foundations that aren’t quite right. But fear not – this guide will help you pick your next foundation with total confidence!

What coverage do you need?

Start by working out your ideal level of coverage. Many foundation faux pas are caused by picking a formula that doesn’t suit your needs. For example, applying too many layers of a light foundation to achieve fuller coverage can result in the colour not matching your skin properly. Similarly, trying to use a full coverage foundation too lightly could end up looking patchy or streaky.

Lightweight skin tints and foundations suit barely-there, your-skin-but-better looks, when you only need a hint of colour and coverage. Medium coverage foundations are excellent for disguising visible skin imperfections while adding some colour to your complexion. Which finish do you prefer?

While all of our foundations are formulated to look fantastic on all skin types, you might find some foundation finishes suit your skin better than others. Matte foundations are perfect for oily skin types, as they assist with reducing the look of excess oil. On the other hand, hydrating foundations are made with extra moisturising ingredients to help nourish dry or dehydrated skin.

If your skin needs less dullness and more glow, opt for a dewy or luminous finish. These foundations are made with complexion-enhancing ingredients to help you look naturally illuminated. Refer to the Your Undertone column to find the option that best represents your natural skin tone.
From there, look across the row to find your ideal shade in the corresponding MCoBeauty foundation.

If you’re able to test our foundations in person (at selected Woolworths, Big W, Chemist Warehouse, Countdown, or The Warehouse stores), follow these steps to try before you buy.

Choose the shade you think is closest to your skin tone. If there’s a lighter shade and a darker shade, pick those up as well.
Apply a small amount of each shade to your jawline (not hand) and blend in. The shade that blends in seamlessly will be your ideal shade.
Extra check: If you have a mirror, check how the shades look on your skin outside of the store, in natural light.
